BL2024-375 An ordinance to amend Chapter 4.20 of the Metropolitan Code of Laws to establish a contract and compliance board for existing construction contracts of the Metropolitan Government. The tragic deaths of Gustavo Ramirez and Denis Geovani Ba Ché underscore the urgency to figure out a solution to protect workers. For almost a year we have tossed around ideas until finally arriving at the Build It Right Bill. By establishing a dedicated board, the ordinance aims to uphold its commitment to worker safety, fair labor practices, and the overall welfare of its residents. The proposed board will have the authority to evaluate existing construction contracts and accept and investigate complaints related to construction contracts where the Metro Government is a party by deploying inspectors. Additionally, the board will make recommendations for policies and practices to improve construction standards. You can ready more about our efforts here. A press conference will be held May 21st at 5:30pm at the Historic Courthouse to discuss the legislation. Unions members, myself, and a relative of the late Denis Geovani Ba Ché, who tragically passed away while working on the roof of Glincliff HS, will deliver remarks. We can’t bring back the people we lost but we can protect people going forward.
